President’s Message
By: Jeff Duplantis, MS, P.E., Branch President

Baton Rouge By Jeffrey L. Duplantis, MS, PE, PMP ASCE Baton Rouge Branch President
For many of you the summer is in full swing, and I hope that you and your family are enjoying a safe summer season. For those of you who, like me, have become more acclimated with the air conditioning in an office setting, I know that the cool fall weather will be an enjoyable relief from the blistering heat of the summer we’ve had so far this year. For me however, the end of summer means that I only have a few more months left in my term as President of the Baton Rouge Branch.
In May the ASCE Baton Rouge Branch joined with LES and APWA to welcome Mayor Kip Holden to our monthly luncheon. As always this drew a large crowd. Mayor Holden discussed the current state of affairs within East Baton Rouge Parish and the City of Baton Rouge. He mentioned several economic development opportunities coming to the area and briefly covered a few upcoming possibilities that he was working on. He went over a short update on the two major projects ongoing in the Parish, and provided some insight into the status of the Green Light and SSO Programs.
In June, Baton Rouge played host to the first State of the Coast Conference. This conference was a joint effort between the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the Coastal Restoration and Protection Authority and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Several members of the ASCE Baton Rouge Board sat on the steering and planning committees in order to ensu... Read More...

LSU/SOUTHERN PORTAL
LSU - Steel Bridge Nationals Report The 2010 National Student Steel Bridge Competition was recently hosted at Purdue University on May 28th and 29th in West Lafayette, Indiana. The LSU steel bridge team, attending nationals for the eighth consecutive year, competed admirably and succeeded in accomplishing the goals that had been set before them at the beginning of the year. The team placed 14th overall out of the 46 schools invited to nationals, and out of 196 schools that competed at all combined regional competitions. These schools hail from nearly every state in addition to Canada and Puerto Rico. The finished product weighed a total of 280 pounds, deflected one inch when subjected to a 2500 pound load, and could be constructed in approximately 7 minutes. These attributes resulted in one of the better national placements for the team in recent years. Major sponsors for the team include: Prospect Steel Company, Schrenk and Peterson Consulting Engineers, CSRS Architects Engineers, ASCE Baton Rouge Branch and ASCE Louisiana Section. Additional assistance from several other companies, various personal contributions, and LSU faculty and staff also aided the team and contributed to their success. The team consisted of Mark Dunn (Captain), David Craft, ... Read More... |

New ASCE Fellow Members By: Chris Knotts, P.E. LA Section President

Ken Perrett, P.E. and Ron Rodi, P.E. were accepted to the fellow membership grade within ASCE. ASCE Fellows occupy the Society's second-highest membership grade, exceeded only by Honorary Members. Fellow status must be attained by professional accomplishments via application and election by the Membership Application Review Committee (MARC). It is a prestigious honor held by fewer than 5% of ASCE members. Fellows are practitioners, educators, mentors, and most of all leaders. They have distinguished careers that have contributed significantly to the Civil Engineering profession. The accomplishments of Fellows have left their marks on their communities, society, and future engineering professionals.
Ken Perrett, P.E. Ken is a native of New Orleans and a graduate of Cor Jesu (Brother Martin) High School. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from UL-Lafayette in 1962. Mr. Perret then began a 38 ye... Read More... Life Members By: Editor

Branch Humor - Quote
"For an optimist the glass is half full, for a pessimist it's half empty, and for an engineer is twice bigger than necessary."
